They were grown for their usefulness, not their beauty. The Incas had an entire religion devoted to the sunflower. They worshipped the stately flower as a sacred image of their sun god. Incan priestesses wore gold sunflower emblems on their clothing. Incan temples were embellished with sunflower imagery hammered in gold.
Sunflowers are hailed by the Chinese as a symbol of longevity. Universally sunflowers are hailed as the symbol of pride and cheerfulness, 1996 was designated the Year of the Sunflower by the National Garden Bureau. The official state flower of Kansas is Helicanthus annus, a species of sunflower. Kansas is known as the Sunflower State. Sunflower Care Tips:
Our sunflowers are packaged with extra care and shipped overnight via fed ex to arrive fresh to maximize bloom time. You sunflowers may enjoy a vase life of between 5-8 days if properly care for. Following the care tips mentioned below will significantly increase the vase life of you rose bouquet by up to 50%.
- Cut the band securing the stems and remove your rose flowers from the box immediately upon
- Remove all the outer guard petals left on to protect you sunflowers during shipment
- Remove all the leaves that fall below the water line to prevent bacteria build up
- Cut the stems of your rose bouquet 1 inch under running water
- Place your sunflowers in a vase filled 3/4th with luke warm water and packet of floral food
- Keep your sunflowers away from drafts, direct sunlight and excessive heat or cold.
- Sunflowers are heavy drinkers so add fresh water daily and re-cut the stems every three to four days
Important Tip for Sunflowers - If your sunflowers wilt or droop prematurely, cut them short and place in slightly warm water. Both the cutting and water temperature will help revive the blooms. Sunflowers need a lot of water, make sure you check the water level daily and replace with fresh water.
