PURPLE CARNATION
Carnation Flower History and Meaning: Also known as Dianthus
Caryophyllus or Chinese pink, the carnation traditionally celebrates
fascination and admiration. White carnations wish "good luck,"
red carnations denote passion, and pink carnations convey a mother's
love. Striped carnations signal refusal. These single flowers have
a long stem of 18-24 inches with many petals. They are also seen
in green, yellow, frosted, and multi-colored varieties. According
to legend, the first carnation was the earthly manifestation of
Mother Mary's undying love for her son, Jesus, resultant from a
tear splashed upon the ground under the cross. Carnations, the national
flowers of Spain, date back to ancient Greek and Roman times and
were used in art and décor. Is scientific name "dianthus"
translates to "flower of love" or "flower of the
gods.”
Arranging Purple Carnations:
• When re-cutting the stems, cut just above one of the nodes
that run up the flower's stalk. This will allow the stem to draw
water more easily.
• Carnations are very sensitive to ethylene gas, a naturally
produced gas, released by fruits, vegetables and decaying floral
material. Keep carnations away from such substances.
